Article: Cosmonaut docking problem in the bag

MOSCOW Soviet scientists, ignoring cosmonauts' joking suggestions of traffic cops in space or "little green men," are mystified how a cloth bag almost scuttled a delicate docking maneuver in orbit.

The research module Kvant, carrying a powerful ultraviolet telescope and other scientific equipment, twice failed to dock last week with the manned Mir space station.

A third attempt succeeded Sunday when cosmonauts Yuri Romanenko and Alexander Laveikin went outside Mir to inspect Kvant's docking unit, which had failed by just a few inches to seal itself completely to Mir.

They found a 16-inch-square cloth bag wedged inside. Its origin remains a mystery.
