Each year, a police officer has a one in 5,000 chance of dying
on the job. That's about the same "annual risk of death" as someone
who drives a car. And one glass of beer a day may pose 10,000 times
greater possible hazard than the typical daily intake of several
common pesticide residues in food. These are among the estimates
contained in several "risk assessment" studies published in Science
magazine. In one of these studies, scientists at the University of
California at Berkeley say that most substances that have caused
cancer in laboratory animals may be of little real danger to humans
