Article: Study notes a high number of cosmetic-linked allergies

Allergic reactions to cosmetics requiring treatment by a physician are reported to the Food and Drug Administration at the rate of 210 per 1 million cosmetics purchased. However, there are even more unreported - and untreated - reactions.

The most extensive study of reactions to cosmetics was undertaken by the North American Dermatitis Group of the American Academy of Dermatology from 1977 to 1983. Based on this six-year study, reactions to cosmetics may be ranked as follows: 1) facial moisturizers and cleansers; 2) hair preparations, including dyes; 3) facial makeup, foundation creams and blushers; 4) fragrance products and 5) nail preparations.
