Allergic reactions to cosmetics requiring treatment by a
physician are reported to the Food and Drug Administration at the
rate of 210 per 1 million cosmetics purchased. However, there are
even more unreported - and untreated - reactions.
The most extensive study of reactions to cosmetics was
undertaken by the North American Dermatitis Group of the American
Academy of Dermatology from 1977 to 1983. Based on this six-year
study, reactions to cosmetics may be ranked as follows: 1) facial
moisturizers and cleansers; 2) hair preparations, including dyes;
3) facial makeup, foundation creams and blushers; 4) fragrance
products and 5) nail preparations.
