The side effects of traditional remedies for hay fever - the
seasonal allergies to grass, ragweed and other pollens - can be as
troublesome as the symptoms. However, newer medications can provide
relief without causing debilitating side effects, an allergy
specialist said.
"Traditional allergy preparations, such as antihistamines,
relieve the symptoms of hay fever but commonly have annoying side
effects, such as drowsiness," said Dr. Eugenia Hawrylko of New York
University Medical Center.
"The side effects are caused when medication circulating in the
bloodstream crosses the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain
from foreign chemical substances, and affects the central nervous ...
