The splendor of the Renaissance has been recaptured at the Art
Institute of Chicago.
The exhibit "Renaissance Master Bronzes from Kunsthistorisches
Museum, Vienna" on display at the Art Institute until June 7, offers
a glimpse of the era's opulence. It concentrates on bronze
statuettes, although some reliefs and fountain figurines are
included. There also are awesome gold and silver pieces such as
Moderno's intricate silver plaquettes, "Flagellation of Christ"
(depicting the Incarnation) and "Madonna and Child With Saints" (the
Passion). Their excessive detail, use of precious metals and
reference to ancient statuary make the objects without parallel in
the show.
