WASHINGTON Probably the most complete cache of knowledge about
the Iran-contra affair and related covert activities has slipped away
with the death of former CIA Director William J. Casey.
Congressional investigators, left to probe indirectly at the
culpability of President Reagan and other senior administration
officials in the scandal, said Casey's death means some questions
probably will go forever unanswered.
Underscoring this problem only hours after Casey died in a Long
Island hospital early yesterday, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard
V. Secord told the congressional Iran-contra hearings that he
believed "the president was informed" about Secord's actions in
