The players in SMU's locker room had tears in their eyes. Their
season had just ended with a 41-0 loss to Arkansas, "but that wasn't
the reason," Ron Morris said. "It was that everybody's leaving.
There's no more togetherness. Everybody's going their separate
ways."
Everybody. Not just the seniors. Everybody. Three months
later, with the NCAA's blessing, more than 180 recruiters from other
schools picked SMU's football team clean.
Football players won't come back to SMU next year because there
will be no football. The school will sit idly in the NCAA's penalty
box for two seasons. Morris, the Bears' second-round draft choice,
will have no alma mater to root for, no core of friends to ...
