Article: Iraqi missile hits U.S. ship // 3 crewmen die; 30 unaccounted for

WASHINGTON A U.S. Navy warship in the Persian Gulf was on fire and heading for Bahrain today after it was hit Sunday night by a missile fired by an Iraqi jet fighter.

Three U.S. sailors were killed and 30 others were missing, Defense Department officials said.

A Pentagon spokesman said the frigate Stark was hit by one of two French-built Exocet missiles fired at it northeast of Bahrain.

Lt. Col. Arnold Williams, a Pentagon spokesman, said the 30 missing crewmen apparently were in the portion of the ship that was hit.

Pentagon officials said they believed the attack on the Stark was "inadvertent."
