A little known and vastly underrated disease, closely resembling
syphilis in the germ that causes it and the long-range damage it can
do, is on the march again.
One of the hotbeds of this summertime tick-borne disorder,
called Lyme disease, is the upper Midwest, where thousands of
Chicago-area residents spend their vacations. Northwestern and
central Wisconsin and parts of northeastern Minnesota are among the
most heavily infested regions in the United States.
The east coast from north of Boston to south of Washington is
another area menaced by this disease, which was unknown in the United
States 25 years ago. So is the west coast from San Francisco north
to Oregon.
