Article: Rape victim spots suspect in court hall; he's arrested

An ex-convict walked into court charged with robbery and walked out to face new charges of rape after a woman saw him strolling down a courthouse hall and pointed him out to police as her assailant.

The 25-year-old rape victim was at Criminal Court Tuesday to face charges of forgery when she saw Darryl Birge, who already has served time for a 1977 rape, in a sixth-floor hall, investigators said.

The woman said she immediately recognized Birge, 31, of 1049 N. Lawndale, as the man who she says raped her last November. She followed him into the courtroom of Judge Thomas J. Maloney.
