Article: Vidalia's sweet success rooted in onions

VIDALIA, Ga. Across the sandy plains of southeast Georgia, folks hit their knees every night and thank the Lord for onions.

However, the onions of their affections are no ordinary tear-jerkers. These are sweet Vidalia onions, good as gold to those who raise them and pure passion to those who crave them.

"We feel like the Vidalia onion is the best thing since sliced bread," said Delbert Bland, who, along with his mother, father and sisters, runs Bland Farms, the biggest producer of Vidalia onions.

"But they're fragile. In a manner of minutes, a freeze can wipe out your whole crop," Bland said. "You do a lot of praying. You're real close to the Lord when you grow Vidalia onions."
