Scientists scanning the bottom of Lake Michigan with a
remote-controlled submarine say the lake is surprisingly clear and
teeming with aquatic life hundreds of feet below the surface.
"It's a zoo down there," said James Bowers, a University of
Michigan scientist who last weekend was among the first researchers
ever to glimpse the Lake Michigan floor using a camera-toting
submarine.
Weekend dives by the unmanned sub in northern Lake Michigan
marked the first phase of an unusual nine-day expedition that has
scientists from Michigan and Wisconsin scouring deepwater sediment,
fish and plant life.
