Article: Big Sur: Splendor and the grass

BIG SUR, Calif. Hiking in Big Sur 20 years ago, a friend and I happened upon an abandoned homestead 2,500 feet above the ocean. The view of plunging coastline and the sun-glazed surface of the Pacific was the most beautiful either of us had ever encountered. We toyed with the notion of buying the place and living there, suspended between reality and a blemishless sky, but, of course, we never did.

Later, we found comparable natural grandeur in places like Italy's Amalfi Coast and the Canadian Arctic, but nothing burned in memory like that day and that view.

I often wondered what became of the place. Perhaps the cabin had been destroyed in the intervening years, by fire spilling over ...
