There are kids everywhere. Many of them are squat, portly,
with thick necks, wearing black suits and white shirts that make them
look like middle-aged midgets.
These chubby little kids run around, punch each other and
jabber in a language you do not understand. They spot you in a
minute. If you have hair that is anything but thick and black, eyes
anything but dark, skin anything but olive, you are an outsider, a
gadje.
One of the kids comes up and asks, "You a cop? You tac
squad?"
Simple truths: These kids will never become president, play
big-league baseball, head a major
corporation or become cops. To do any of those things would mean
they had broken from their roots, ...
