PARIS Defending women's champion Chris Evert advanced to the
quarterfinals of the French Open tennis championships Sunday, while
Ivan Lendl's bid to retain the men's title was in jeopardy against
Sweden's Joakim Nystrom in a match halted by darkness.
Evert, bidding to win the Grand Slam event for the eighth time
and third in a row, overpowered 12th-seeded Katerina Maleeva of
Bulgaria 6-3, 6-1 on her favorite court, No. 1.
But Lendl was having trouble with Nystrom, who beat him at the
Italian Open 10 days ago. After three hours, 17 minutes on center
court, the world's No. 1 player trailed two sets to one but led 4-0
in the fourth. Nystrom won the first set 6-2, Lendl the second 6-1
