There's a new song-and-dance man in Illinois politics.

Attorney General Neil F. Hartigan, a once and future Democratic candidate for governor who isn't renowned for his sense of humor, played against type the other night at the annual Gridiron Dinner of the Illinois Legislative Correspondents Association.

More than a few political figures have bombed under similar circumstances. And some of Hartigan's friends had been wary about whether the red-headed Chicagoan should have accepted the invitation to deliver the political establishment's response to the press corps's satirical barbs.
