Article: What now for State Street? // Little damage from Wieboldt's demise

With its departure from State Street in July, Wieboldt Stores will join a group whose members include some of the biggest names in Chicago retail history: Sears, Ward's, Goldblatt's and Lytton's.

Though any addition to that list of goliaths who've recently abandoned the downtown shopping area may seem alarming, most retail experts believe the long-term damage to the area from Wieboldt's demise will be minimal.

"Aside from the short-term sorrow of seeing any store close, it's a blip," one downtown retailer said. "It's a pimple on State Street's face."
