If American automakers are so good, why don't they build cars that can compete with European performance sedans?

Actually, Detroit lacks a one-on-one competitor to Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Peugeot and Saab sedans because it never really wanted to build one.

It never had to. Conventional U.S. sedans outsell the the Europeans by an incredibly large amount.

For instance, Olds sold 10 times the number of cars Mercedes did last year in the United States. Olds sold 1,059,400 cars, Mercedes 99,314. And Mercedes has the top name in European performance sedans.

With all those customers, Olds would be foolish to try turning all its sedans into European-style autos.
