Article: NASA mulling manned trips to moon or Mars

WASHINGTON Looking beyond resumption of space shuttle flights next year and establishment of a permanent space station in the mid-1990s, NASA is considering returning astronauts to the moon or sending a manned mission to Mars.

"It's time to make sure that we understand what our goals will be in the late 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century," astronaut Sally K. Ride said Monday.

Ride, who heads the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's new Office of Space Exploration, outlined the agency's thinking on the two ventures at the opening of a five-day conference on space biology and medicine.
