Holes in your cane or wicker furniture may be perfectly
appropriate - unless, of course, they come from the antics of kids
and other wildlife.
"Those new combs kids have in their back pockets are very good
for the caning business," said John Zanetti, who repairs cane
furniture part time from his home in Glen Cove, N.Y.
"A machine-caned chair with heavy kitchen use usually will last
five years - unless a kid's knee goes through it," said Al Affronti,
owner of Village Seat Weavers of Port Jefferson, N.Y.
Zanetti and Affronti are among those dedicated to the gentle art
of caning - weaving strands of rattan into chair seats or backs.
