Article: D.C. women's arts museum recovers after weak premiere

WASHINGTON, D.C. The National Museum of Women in the Arts here was
nearly stillborn. The press focused on whether there was a need for
such a specialized institution, visitors had trouble finding the
museum, and the inaugural show seemed purposely self-defeating.
The new show, "Selected Works from the Permanent Collection of
the National Museum of Women in the Arts," which opened June 30,
offers hope for the museum's success. The pieces in the exhibit are
outstanding, and many are by artists rarely represented in major
(particularly American) museums.
Among the artists are Paula Modersohn-Becker, the forerunner of
