Former White Sox pitcher LaMarr Hoyt isn't alone in his struggle for sleep.

Researchers have found that in any given year, one-third of adults experience insomnia. And surveys indicate 6 percent of adults have chronic insomnia, said Dr. Stephen Burton, a sleep disorders expert at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.

Hoyt, 32, who spent 38 days in jail last year on drug-related charges, has said lack of sleep - not alcohol or drugs - is the root of his problems.

Burton said any of the many difficulties from which Hoyt suffers - from shoulder pain to marital woes - is sufficient to cause insomnia. Millions of Americans are losing sleep over their own problems.
