Article: U.S. warns Iran, Iraq // Firm tanker policy stressed by officials

WASHINGTON The United States has given strong warnings to Iran against attacking U.S. naval convoys in the Persian Gulf and has pressed Iraq to call off strikes on Iranian shipping, senior administration officials said Tuesday.

"We wanted to make sure there is no misunderstanding" Washington's determination in the venture, one official said.

The mission got under way early Tuesday when the Navy put two Kuwaiti oil tankers under the American flag and prepared to escort them into the gulf through the Strait of Hormuz past Iranian gun and missile emplacements.
