K. K. Gaur, editor of the editorial pages of the Chicago
Sun-Times, recently visited Baghdad as part of a United Nations
fact-finding mission. This is his report on life in the ancient
capital of Iraq.
Security for the Iraq Airways flight from Amman, Jordan, to
Baghdad, Iraq, should have told the passengers something about the
concerns of a country at war.
What they didn't know was that the pilot's announcement of the
temperature when setting down at Saddam International Airport late
that evening was the last time they would get an official weather
report during their stay in Iraq.
Weather is a state secret. Newspapers, radio, television carry
no information about Iraq's weather. ...
