Madonna raised some hackles when she called her birthplace, Bay
City, Mich., a "little smelly town" on national television.
During an interview broadcast on NBC's "Today" show, host Jane
Pauley asked the touring singer about her background. Madonna said
she was from Bay City, a town of about 41,000 people.
"Little town?" Pauley asked.
"Uh huh. Little smelly town in northern Michigan," Madonna
said. "Like New Jersey. There's a lot of chemical dumps there or
something."
Told of her comments, Bay City Mayor Timothy Sullivan hoped she
would reconsider her assessment.
