GETTING THERE: There are no nonstop flights to Santa Barbara,
Calif., from Washington. You can connect in Los Angeles for the 45-
minute flight north, but it's cheaper to look for a sale fare to one
of the L.A.-area airports and then rent a car. Discounter JetBlue,
for example, charges as little $99 each way from Washington Dulles to
Long Beach; it adds only another half-hour to the drive, and you get
a personal seatback TV and blue potato chips in the bargain. Plus,
the Long Beach airport is infinitely more manageable than LAX.
WHEN TO GO: May through September is high season, but Santa
Barbara is a year-round destination -- temperatures range from the
