Article: Baking soda absorbs odors in dishwasher

What with air-conditioners gobbling up our energy dollars during this hot summer, it behooves us to watch other energy-eating appliances to save money. Don't run your dishwasher before it is filled with dishes.

However, if you do this, you may encounter another problem: that of dishwasher odor, sour smells from soiled dishes when the dishwasher door is opened to add more dishes. And, of course, I have the answer.

Between washes, sprinkle about a quarter cup of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher to absorb stale food odors. The unique chemical properties of baking soda allow it to neutralize odors and to create a pleasant, odor-free environment in the dishwasher.
