Article: Filmmaker Rash plays with morality in teen film

LOS ANGELES Steve Rash is an unassuming, jovial Texan whose directing career has been inexplicably marked by contradiction and controversy.

His low-budget feature debut, "The Buddy Holly Story," was one of 1978's best-received films. Three years later, "Under the Rainbow," a satire about the making of "The Wizard of Oz," was an expensive disaster that sent Rash's professional fortunes into a tailspin. Now, with his third movie, the low-budget teen comedy "Can't Buy Me Love," now at local theaters, Rash finds himself in the position of having to justify much of an admittedly "exploitative" film he's quite proud of.
