John E. Stanton, 78, former managing editor of the late Chicago Daily News and founder of several suburban dailies, died Thursday night in Holy Family Hospital, Des Plaines, after a stroke.

Mr. Stanton, who lived in Arlington Heights, joined the Daily News staff in 1945 and progressively served as copy editor, copy desk chief and night news editor. He became feature editor in 1959 and managing editor in 1961.

In 1965, he was selected by Field Enterprises to establish a chain of local daily newspapers in the northwest suburbs. He founded the Arlington Day, the Prospect Day and the Des Plaines Day within the next two years. The papers won many awards but were sold to Paddock ...
