NEW YORK On the screen, Michael Caine is a master of understatement.
A shrug, a pause, a blink reveals a feeling, a life, a world.
In the flesh, this talent is even more striking. Last weekend,
in a staid Manhattan hotel room, he played the part of actor Michael
Caine, a role he has been polishing for the past 25 years. He
occupied a sofa with utter authority, his long legs, encased in
tailored charcoal slacks, crossed before him in a casual barricade.
His big, amiable face was thrown back and peered at his audience from
the open collar of a pristine blue shirt. His massive, avuncular
hands, their pinkness highlighted by the navy blue of his blazer, lay
