NEW YORK We will be left without an American in the men's singles
final in the American national tennis championships for the second
year in a row.
We had better get used to it, because it will be that way until
Ivan Lendl takes the oath of citizenship. There is no native
American in sight to be the next John McEnroe or the next Jimmy
Connors.
Yeah, I know Connors will be in the semifinals tomorrow, but if
you have faith he can beat Lendl, you're still hanging your stocking
for Santa Claus. Lendl has beaten Connors 13 matches in a row.
And, yes, McEnroe is alive and well and waiting for Tatum to
deliver their second child today or tomorrow. But anyone who saw
Lendl demolish him ...
