Mike Tomczak's back was so far against the wall, he was being
fitted for vertical blinds. That's how it looked, anyway. It turned
out Tomczak was just making room for a running start.
He has done it often, as he's quick to point out. Tomczak
clawed his way up from oblivion at Thornton Fractional North High
School, at Ohio State, and now with the Bears. Especially with the
Bears.
Coach Mike Ditka had to be talked out of cutting him last year.
In a six-month period, the Bears brought in Doug Flutie and Jim
Harbaugh to pry Tomczak off the roster. Tomczak went to training
camp with a cutdown ax for his shadow.
That was six weeks ago. Monday night, he'll start the season
