Mary A. Daegling, 101, a retired secretary and former head
stenographer for the Chicago Fire Department, died Monday in a North
Side nursing home.
Mrs. Daegling, of Rogers Park, served as head stenographer for
former Fire Commissioners Michael J. Corrigan, Anthony Mullaney and
Robert J. Quinn.
"I think Anthony Mullaney was her favorite," said Betty Rice, a
niece who referred to her aunt as "my closest friend."
"I used to call her the eighth wonder of the world because she
had so much get up and go," Rice said, adding that Mrs. Daegling
continued driving until she was 97. "She was always on the go, and
