Article: Pope's abortion words stir dispute // Catholic resentment voiced

Some Catholics in Chicago reacted angrily Saturday when Pope John Paul II used his last scheduled public appearance in the United States to attack American acceptance of abortion.

Although the pope had addressed the issue of abortion on several occasions during his 10-day tour, his remarks made Saturday in Detroit were the first directed against the U.S. position.

Several Catholics queried about the pope's stance while leaving Holy Name Cathedral Saturday night were unhappy with his comments.

"He is wrong in attacking the U.S. and speaking against abortion," said North Sider Annabelle Lee, 30.
