There's a story, supposedly true, from South America about a
judge's wife who was shot to death because she held up traffic. The
husband condemned the triggerman, a member of a set of twins, to
death.
Unfortunately for his brother, they were Siamese twins. The
innocent twin pleaded: "He did it. I didn't." He died with his
brother anyway.
Until recent years, that was the lot of Siamese twins, flesh and
fate intertwined, two beings in one convoluted package.
But doctors increasingly have turned to surgery to try to offer
these twins a life apart. Siamese twins, joined at the head, were in
the news again last week because of an intricate 22-hour operation in
Baltimore on Sept. 6 to ...
