Americans watching the Bork hearings are making a shocking
discovery: The Robert Bork nominated to serve as the potential swing
justice by President Reagan is a different person from the Robert
Bork that the Senate is being asked to confirm. As in a zany plot
from a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, some diabolical prankster must
have switched the two Borks while our
attention was diverted by the Iran-contra hearings.
The Robert Bork who was nominated by the president - we'll call
him "White House Bork" - is, in the words of a senior White House
aide, anything but a moderate. "It's a mistake," the aide said, "to
