The chances are greater than 50 percent that schoolchildren will
be victims of pediculosis during the first few months of the school
year.
What is pediculosis? It's the condition of being infested with
head lice. While head lice is a community health problem that does
not cause many ill effects, the range of parental reaction could vary
from denial to blame of school officials or neighbors.
In spite of being able to prevent large outbreaks of measles,
scarlet fever, diphtheria, polio and other childhood diseases, we
still cannot prevent head lice. (It is second only to the common cold
in affecting children.)
About 25 years ago, it was a fairly common custom to soak
youngsters' heads ...
