Burger King Monday served up its biggest Whopper - its $200
million advertising account - to N W Ayer, ending a five-month search
by the fast-food restaurant chain to find a new agency.
In May, Burger King U.S.A., a unit of Pillsbury, told J. Walter
Thompson U.S.A., its previous advertising agency, that it was putting
the ad account up for review. That was a stunning blow to Thompson,
which has suffered internal turmoil and a takeover this year and
counted Burger King as its second-largest account, behind the Ford
Motor Co.
Thompson joined the new competition, joining Ayer and a third
agency, D'Arcy, Masius, Benton & Bowles, as finalists for the
account.
