Article: Scientists due to report today on `hole' in ozone layer

The winds are beginning to pick up at the southern tip of South America, bringing to an end one of the most unusual, and important, scientific expeditions.

For the last seven weeks, more than 150 scientists and technicians have been in Punta Arenas, Chile, to chart and investigate the formation of a mysterious "hole" in the ozone layer in the stratosphere above Antarctica.

The infamous crosswinds that have wrecked more than a few ships in the Straits of Magellan will make it impossible for the scientists' aircraft to continue flying. But they say the flights by the ER-2 - a modified U-2 spy plane - and a customized DC-8 have gathered a wealth of data.
