`The Last Interview: I Believed." That was the Washington Post
headline of Oct. 1. And the subhead of the article by Robert
Woodward was an assured, "Casey, Asked If He Knew of Contra
Diversion, Finally Nodded Yes."
The headlines, of course, were from Watergate chronicler Bob
Woodward's jazzy new book, Veil: The Secret Wars of the CIA -
1981-1987, about the late CIA director William J. Casey. It is
wowing Washington almost as much as did his Watergate coverage.
When one stops to ask the basically irrelevant question of
whether there was any such "last interview," and, even if there was,
what exactly it was that William Casey "believed," one begins to
wonder what Mr. Woodward has ...
