Article: Catholic League prestige slipping

The Catholic League won five state football titles from 1976-81. All it can brag about since is two second-place finishes.

What's happened?

"The whole scenario has caught up with the Catholic League," Gordon Tech coach Tom Winiecki said. "Part of it is tuition, part is the type of athlete we're getting. There will still be good teams, but the level of competition has evened out. You're not going to see four or five dominating teams."

Winiecki said parents are thinking twice about sending their sons to Catholic League schools, where tuition is higher and financial aid tougher to get than it used to be. Plus, coaches say suburban programs are catching up to the Catholic League.
