WARSAW The Polish parliament Saturday approved a proposal to
hold a rare national referendum next month to seek public support for
sweeping economic reforms that include substantial price increases.
The referendum is part of the government's effort to make the
austere economic measures more palatable to the people. It will be
the second referendum since the Communist Party took power in 1944.
The first was in 1947 on nationalization of key industries and
incorporation of former German territories into Poland.
Polish Television said the question of price increases, which
one official newspaper estimated could be as much as 57 percent next
year, will be included in the referendum Nov. 29.
