Two very distinct concerns inform George Segal's new works at
Richard Gray Gallery, 620 N. Michigan, through the end of this month.
His familiar life-cast plaster figures in lonely environments are as
poetic and quietly moving as ever.
In addition to these, however, Segal has made a number of
astonishing mixed-media assemblages, which give free reign to his
refined formal interests and his fascination with art of the past.
Inspired by cubist still lifes by Picasso and Georges Braques -
collages of paper and newsprint, fake wood grains and chair caning -
Segal has translated those delicate art historical icons into hefty
