Travelers become collectors without even realizing it. The
matchbooks pile up, the T-shirts fill the dresser drawer, the native
carvings take over the mantel. And it only dawned on me recently
that I've been stashing away volcanoes over the past 15 years.
To be sure, my collection of lava-belching mountains is far from
complete. Of the 850 volcanoes known to have been active since the
dawn of recorded history, I've seen three dozen or so.
That still makes a pretty solid starter set - especially since
it includes some of the world's most famous fire-and-brimstone spots:
Kilauea on Hawaii's Big Island, St. Helens in Washington, Lassen in
California, Popocatapetl in Mexico, Pelee on ...
