It started with a leak in the offensive line. And by the end of Sunday afternoon's 19-17 loss to New Orleans the Spare Bears had finally gone flat. The wheels had fallen off.

The real Bears stayed away from Soldier Field. But 46,813 non-union fans, 14,000 more than last week, showed up to see a Saint with the glorious name of Florian Kempf kick three second-half field goals without a miss.

The last one traveled 21 yards and came with 4 12 minutes remaining. It ended the Bears' hopes for an undefeated season. And it began a search for reasons why the replacements couldn't holds leads of 10-0 and 17-3. Or why they didn't score again after the middle of the second ...
