Article: The domino theory tumbles

Since World War II the domino theory has been at the core of American foreign policy as practiced in the Third World. President Reagan's single-minded determination to sit on the Sandinistas until they cry "uncle" is only the latest manifestation of a long held viewpoint. For Mr. Reagan, revolutionary governments in Central America mean "direct threats at or near our borders."

The domino theory reduced to its essentials means that the United States must take decisive action to prevent a communist victory in "Country A," which alone is of little or no strategic significance to American interests, to protect against communist takeovers in geographically contiguous countries B, C,and D.
