SEVILLE, Spain World chess champion Gary Kasparov pulled even
with Anatoly Karpov Tuesday by scoring an impressive victory in the
eighth game of their series.
After sealing his 42nd move to adjourn play Monday night,
Karpov, playing black and considered by experts to be at a
substantial disadvantage, fought on for only 42 minutes when play was
resumed before resigning on move 50.
"There was really no way, in the long run, that Karpov could
have prevented the defeat," said Swedish grandmaster Ulf Anderssen.
"Kasparov is now once again the favorite in the match," said
Bjarke Kristensen, a Danish international master. "In this game, he
