Article: Conservative Li named China's acting premier

BEIJING Li Peng, a 59-year-old, Soviet-trained politician considered by many to be lukewarm to rapid Western-style reforms, was named China's acting premier Tuesday.

The appointment of Li to succeed reform-minded Zhao Ziyang, who was named Communist Party boss earlier this month, had been expected and completes a monthlong realignment of China's top political leaders.

Li will serve as premier at least until March, when the National People's Congress - China's rubber-stamp parliament - will meet to elect a full-time premier. Li is considered almost certain to be chosen for the job, China's top administrative post.
