Getting ready to go to work, Jack Murphy paused before a TV set
in his North Side home. The big news story the morning of Jan. 30,
1986, was disturbing: A young ex-Marine had been shot and killed
during an overnight robbery attempt on a CTA L platform. It was one
of those random acts of violence that leaves everyone in the city
feeling vulnerable.
Murphy had seen plenty of the dark side of human nature during a
tour of duty some years before with the Cook County state's
attorney's office. He pushed the murder out of his mind and headed
