GHENT, Belgium There's ferment in Ghent. The ancient Flemish center
is bursting with new hotels, including a brilliantly designed Novotel
shaped to resemble the medieval structures alongside, a modern Ibis
Hotel, and budget-priced Arcades.
And why are tourists streaming to Ghent? Because of historic
preservation. Cities that safeguard their past thrive in the present
and grow for tomorrow.
By protecting its historic center from demolition and
restricting skyscrapers to the outer parts, a European town scarcely
known to most Americans has built a prosperous tourist industry.
